The Avenue of Avenues
A soundtrack The Avenue of Avenues is dedicated to an audio-walk along Avenue of Freedom in Kaunas, the second biggest city in Lithuania. It is one of the longest and most popular pedestrian avenue in the country. The soundtrack is created by using and interpreting field recordings from various places of the world. While walking along one particular space with itsâ own soundscape, one moves into other spaces, sounds, memories and experiences. Everything here is much more hypnotic and dreamy than casual. However, such an audio-cinema not only dips into a perspective of several spaces and moments, but also invites to wake up to the magic realism of here-and-now, where every step is a possibility. On the other hand, a soundtrack is not a mere collage of documentary sonic recordings, but also a collage of moods of a musical and mesmeric character.
Under Creative Commons license, the recordings of internet archives Sound Transit (http://turbulence.org/soundtransit/) and radio aporee (http://radio.aporee.org/) are used for the piece. These archives are known as platforms for sonic nomadism across all over the world. While sensing their feet on the Avenue of Freedom in Kaunas, sonic wanderers are invited to Antwerp, Huelva, Cape Town, Prague, Riga, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Bangkok, New York, Katmandu, uhan, Sana, Vatican by the sounds recorded by artists Ward Weis (Planktone), Nko, Danny Meltzer, Clemens von Reusner, Simon James, John Hopkins, Marc Raaphorst, speltier@wp..., Keith de Mendocos, Acoustic Space Lab collective, zrs, Maksim Shentelev, Massimo Rizzo, Laure Principaud, Birute Ziogaite, Milda Lauzikaite and Tautvydas Bajarkevicius, author of the soundtrack.
Sounds of spaces enfold each other in The Avenue of Avenues: one can hear a sound of Brabo fountain in Antwerp together with a flow of voices and strokes of bell, reverberating in a town square; a few elderly men play Domino in Huelva (Spain); children play musical rhythms of South Africa and sing in Cape Town; passers-by wait for the strokes of astronomical clock in Prague; street musicians fill the streets of the same Prague with recognizable tunes; there are steps of a crowd and accordion present in Riga; you can witness a soundscape of a bridge in Amsterdam; children enjoy snow in the centre of Stockholm; coins are thrown into a box of one of the temples in Bangkok; music box plays near the entrance of a toy store in Tallinn; other sonic miniatures reveal themselves from other places of the world â imagination creates stories for them much better than facts.
The soundtrack has been initially created for a specific situation. It's been recommended to listen to it while walking along Avenue of Freedom in Kaunas. However, no one knows, what is the perfect place for Avenue of Avenues. Audio-walk integrates acoustic and visual, casual and âimplantedâ urban landscapes into one dream-like experience. The soundtrack for an audio-walk can be found in the blog of the project, dedicated to Avenue of Freedom in Kaunas: http://projectaleja.wordpress.com.
External, ear-enfolding headphones are strongly recommended for audio-walks.
