AKA Vessel of Wrath.
If you enjoy Somerset Maugham stories, then you will enjoy this near-perfect, delightful film adaptation.
The characters catch the essence of Maugham, and both Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester (husband and wife team) breath life into two very opposite sorts of people who discover--through adversity--that they have more in common than they dreamed possible

Great to see Robert Newton
Robert Newton had great screen presence. Even when appearing with Lanchester and Laughton, both dominant screen personalities, Newton is able to draw the audience.
Many viewers will remember him as a pirate, indeed he defined the standard for that role by which all other pirate performances are judged.
Here he gives a competent performance but his Dutch accent is irregular and in some scenes sounds altogether lacking.

Quality Film
The executive function really comes out toward the end of the film. Charles Laughton becomes more convincing as a character. I'll always enjoy this as a product of the "Edwardian Era".
