The Dick Van Dyke Show was a sitcom that aired on CBS from 1961 to 1966, for five seasons with 158 episodes in total. The show starred Dick Van Dyke as Rob Petrie, a head writer for the fictitious comedy television show, The Alan Brady Show, and Mary Tyler Moore as his wife, Laura Petrie. Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie played Rob Petrie’s co-writers, Buddy Sorrell and Sally Rogers, and Richard Deacon played the show’s producer, Mel Cooley. The showrunner and head writer, Carl Reiner, created The Dick Van Dyke Show using his own experiences in the television show writing business as inspiration. The series was based on a television show pilot, The Head of the Family, which Reiner also starred in and wrote.
“Hustling the Hustler”, the 35th episode of the show, originally aired on Wednesday, October 24th, 1962 at 9:30 P.M. In the episode, Buddy Sorrel’s estranged brother, Blackie Sorrel (played by Phil Leeds), visits Buddy in The Alan Brady Show writers’ room and intends to renew their relationship. However, Blackie, a former pool hustler, fails to convince Buddy that he no longer engages in disingenuous behavior. Later, Rob coincidentally meets Blackie on his own. Unaware of the history between the two Sorrell brothers, Rob invites Blackie to the Petries’ house for dinner, and, eventually, a few rounds of billiards.

I wonder how many times they had to try to get that ending!
The sound and picture were out of sync. Was it just a fluke today?

Subject: Great early performance by Phil Leeds
Leeds was a popular character actor who worked into his early 80's, appearing on shows like Roseanne & Ally McBeal, and in movies like 'Frankie & Johnny' supporting Michelle Pfeiffer. It's cool seeing him playing this shifty pool hustler opposite Rob Petrie.
