Yes, you're right. Silent original version is better...
Suggestion: change, in the name of the files, 1925 to 1942.

Subject: Needed to download plug-in for audio to work...
I had to download an ac3 filter for the audio track to work in WMP (it was free though, so no big deal). I haven't seen the original silent version, but I did find the voice-overs a little distracting. I don't like this one as much as some of Chaplin's other films (might have liked the original more), but it's still great.

Subject: Not 1925.
While still a fine film and a cornerstone of Chaplin's catalogue and comedy's catalogue in general, this is NOT the original version of The Gold Rush.
This is the butchered and severely shortened rerelease that Chaplin created in 1942 by removing all title cards, shortening some scenes that shouldn't have been, and narrating, somewhat insultingly, over top of the film that did remain.
I can only assume that Chaplin did this to make a few bucks by "converting" this silent film into a sound film. It loses a lot in the translation, and I would advise getting a real copy of the actual silent, which is funnier, better, and actually complete.
