Bob Steele Uncovers the Real Bad Guys
Another very good Bob Steele western without comedy or song - pure western good vs. bad, and guess who wins? While Steele's acting in this one is good, the movie is carried by the perennial bad guys, who knew how to do their stuff: Done Merton (Kemper Mills) and Earl Dwire (Bud Cooper). Also excellent is Ernie Adams (Wally Smeed) a bad guy with a different agenda. Typical crook Bud Buster (Carl Beeman) takes a turn as a grizzled old good guy who is Steele's friend. Eleanor Steward is the obligatory beauty and Steele love interest - not much of an actress, but she looks good, looks frightened, yells "Dan, Dan" when Steele's character is in trouble, seems to ride well - so she's got her part covered. As always in Steele films there is plenty of action - fist fight, gun play, cattle rustling, riding, riding and more riding. Would like to give the film 3 1/2 stars, but for the taut all-western script with a few good twists and turns and the great villains, I'll go with 4 stars.
