Seymore, one employee brings his plant, he named after the other employee Audrey, 'Audrey-Jr.', in order to be allowed to keep his job and not to get fired. He quickly finds out, the plant likes blood, and in fact blood is the most effective fertilizer for it.
When Seymore cannot spare any more of his own blood, he accidentally kills a man by night, takes some body-parts and begins to feed them to Audrey-Jr. Mushnick sees what's going on, but doesn't inform the police. When asked, Seymore says, the plant usually eats insects. His next victim is the dentist, who is also a customer of the florist shop. He is stabbed, then Seymore acts as dentist , doing his job for one patient and feeds the dead body to the carnivorous plant afterwards.
The police check out the situation at Mushnick's, Audrey and Seymore go out and have diner with Seymore's mother, Mushnick stays in the shop in order to monitor the plant, that grew to mansize in the meantime.
When a robber comes, Mushnick tells him, the money is inside Audrey-Jr., so he also gets eaten upon climbing inside.
When Audrey and Seymore just want to fall in love, the plant gets in their way, because it demands more food. After some wandering the streets by night and some discussion with a prostitute, he brings her as the next food-portion.
It becomes obvious what happened, when Audrey-Jr. produces blossoms depicting the faces of it's victims. So the police and Mushnick chase Seymore by night, but they don't quite manage to get him. He finally commits suicide, serving as the plant's last ration of food deliberately.
