Bob Steele - Tender, Tuneful and True
We only get 63 out of 66 minutes here - yes, there are some accidental jump cuts, some pixelation and other problems - but nothing to make this movie unwatchable. I found this early talkie from 1930 to be refreshingly superior in many ways - first of all, there is a script with real emotion at its heart; second, Steele's facial expressions of emotions are strong - no doubt a holdover from his silent days, they come across here as real, rather than overdone - these two items together make this one of the stronger and more engrossing Steele film I have seen on the IA - unlike the later ones where his acting is on the stiff side. While I thought there were too many songs - they got on my nerves just as they got on the nerves of the film's bad guys - he low tenor voice was still very sweet and expressive. And the part of the plot, involving Steele's love from Mexican Rita Rey (Carmelita Carlos) was an excellent modern touch - going against the typical portrayals of Mexican women as wanton and stupid - and anticipating the advent and acceptance of such Mexican stars as Lupe Velez. Seeing a very young Al St. John - who went on to play grizzled sidekicks - was also fascinating - a rather slim, handsome man, who got to sing a song and make a change to his moral compass. Rita Rey, beautiful, sensuous, a vocalist and dancer - according to IMDb and a further internet search - appeared in 4 U.S. produced movies between 1930-31 - one with Charley Chase, "El Principe del Dolar" (Dollar Dizzy in its English version) and one "La Fuerza del Querer" with Maria Alba, both in Spanish. She was born an died in Mexico City, 1917-1994. It would be great to have more info on this fine actress. Also, an early talkie by some of the classic baddies: Charles King, Slim Whitaker, Cliff Lyons, and Shorty Hendricks. There's plenty of action involving gun fights and very well done fist fights. Good plot, script, acting ,and singing all around. Definitely worth watching.

Might be pretty good if....................
Bob Steele is one of my favorite "B" guys and was one of the top western actors around. However, I doubt if you'll be able to get through this awful copy of Oklahoma Cyclone. The sound is terrible, there are a lot of skips in the film and it's almost impossible to watch. We can hope a better quality print gets downloaded.
