The Sky is Never Dark Anymore EP

Would you like to try our new video/audio player ? (beta!)

A short EP I made late in 2005. It was created in response to the night sky. In my world, the night is not black, but a strange brown color. I tried to capture the strangeness with my music, and this is the result.

I would rate this 3.5/5.0

It is almost a given that people who live in big cities have experienced light pollution at night where the sky isnât really dark any more but a brownish tint. I believe many of these people have probably felt certain amounts of awkwardness, strangeness or even desire to escape into a dark night when faced with the brown sky. Guess what, now you can listen to music that expresses those feelings and more.

In The Sky is Never Dark Anymore EP, we get to listen to OverCoatâs musical treatise on his feelings of the brownish goo of a night sky. Itâs a short EP with a run time of around 15 minutes but highly listenable. The EP reminds me of the earlier works of Boards of Canada although I believe OverCoat has had no BoC influences from browsing his website. From the ominous sounding and sometimes out of tune synths to the mini moments of exuberances, this EP is something of a small undiscovered gem on the Internet. So give it a listen.

Notable tracks:
Light Pollution
I like the distorted percussion that seems to have a tone but the melodic bassline is probably the hook of this track. I felt that the buildup at the 2:45 minute mark was very good but unfortunately the track seemed a bit draggy after that. It should probably have ended sooner but thatâs just my opinion.

No Further Frontier
Interesting percussion playing a quite familiar drum beat. This track washes away the moodiness of the whole EP with a vocal pad breakdown and ends on a more optimistic note.
