The Undrugging Of Tony Blackpasture
by Charles Rice Goff III
BACKGROUND:
In April of 2010, C. Goff III received the following comment about a video that he had posted on YOU TUBE of a performance that he had given in April of 2008:
"what were u on bro lol"
The only thing that Goff was "on" when he had given this performance was a strong cup of coffee. However, inspired by the suggestion that his performance was in some way influenced by mind-altering drugs, Goff undertook the mission which led to the creation of the composition archived here.
Initially, Goff was curious about the identity and tastes of the person who had posted the comment. He visited the author's YOU TUBE site to discover a collection of videos featuring performances by a teen-aged male. These videos were shot live with a still camera mounted on a desk, aimed at the young man's face as he sung popular songs karaoke-style while reading the lyrics off of a computer screen.
DETAILS OF GOFF'S COMPOSITIONAL PROCESS:
1) Goff recorded the audio from one of the young man's videos.
2) Goff cleaned the hisses and clicks from the young man's recording, converted the recording into an mp3 file, and loaded it into a portable mp3 player.
3) Goff set the mp3 player on "auto replay" and plugged it into the "audio in" jack of his Korg R3 Vocoder/Synthesizer.
4) Goff plugged the R3 into a digital loop duplicator, which he then plugged into a computer recording program.
5) Over the course of three days, Goff improvised a total of 4 hours of audio experiments using the young man's karaoke recording as the primary vocal element.
6) Goff mixed and edited his audio experiments down into one 76-minute-long recording.
NOTE: Goff ingested no mind-altering drugs (including alcohol) during any of the above steps.
Wishing to spare the young man any knowledge of his experiment, Goff selected the pseudonym: "Tony Blackpasture" for the young man, and aptly named his composition: "The Undrugging Of Tony Blackpasture." In Goff's opinion, the psychedelic qualities of this piece exceed those of the performance about which the young man had commented by a considerable margin.
GOFF'S VERBAL DESCRIPTION OF "THE UNDRUGGING OF TONY BLACKPASTURE" :
Electronic sounds combine with Tony's singing into hundreds of strange combinations of pitch and rhythm. Few, if any, traces of traditional musical genres are present. Repetition and dadaesque cut-and-paste verbiage build up into layers of sonic atmosphere, which produce a wide range of mood responses for listeners, particularly for those listeners with the fortitude to digest the entire composition. Listening at a low to medium volume level is recommended for achieving full psycho-absorption and subsequent delirium.

Subject: A Sonic Journey
Subject: A Sonic Journey
This is an incredible sonic journey. At times it reminds me of Philip Glass of "The Photographer" era or of the dark excursions of industrial music from the 1980's but it is all Charles Goff. The concept is quite unique and is developed
wonderfully. A composition that is over one hour in length could be boring however not here. Be prepared, this demands your full attention and it is worth it.
