Subject: Great Shows !
"The Whistler" was always one of my favorites !
Great shows, great casts, great scripts.
Like "Inner Sanctum" & "Suspense" it was an anthology series...unlike those two shows, it didn't always use "name" stars in the cast.
But, great OTR Pros made their own impact on the genre and, eventually, made names for themselves: Gerald Mohr ("Phillip Marlowe"), Elliot Lewis, Cathy Lewis, Hans Conreid, Bill Johnstone (who had been "The Shadow"), Lurene Tuttle, and many others.
Joseph Kearns, and a few others, played the narrator through the years, and when the show was sponsored by Signal Gasoline, Marvin Miller (a St. Louis native) was the shows announcer & also the narrator for a number of episodes.
BUT the most popular narrator was Bill Forman who reigned almost through the entire run of the Signal Gasoline sponsorship.
However, in regards to the below post, Jack Webb was never "The Whistler" narrator, or its announcer, but did act in a few of the shows.
Many thanks for putting these shows online !
BTW: Check-Out the Feature Films here, as there were a number of "Whistler" Features produced in the 40's. AND, Dorothy Roberts performed the "Whistler's Whistle". Legend has it that they couldn't find a male to reach the octaves that she could !

I'm only 47. I intially discovered The Whistler in early 2006 while listening to satellite radio. Then it became my favorite and there is nothing better than a Saturday/Sunday night and morning listening to The Whistler.

I found the whistler about three months ago, an fell in love with the show. I'm just 50 an I missed the radio age. But I would say that the whistler is the best mystery show that was on radio in the 1940s an 1950s. The endings always made me go wow. I started on the later ones, but the 1942 are great.

I read an article many years back, which stated that Jack Webb was very popular as The Whistler. I never did find out if they meant on Radio, in the Movies, on Television - which I doubt because, of the time??? If anyone knows please put something up about it here.
I also heard that this show was done on West Coast versus back east?
Will never forget the twelve note intro to this series, and it's nice to enjoy some of these shows once again.

"The Whistler" is another one of the great anthology series that follows in the shadows of "Suspense" and "Inner Sanctum". It may not have lasted as long as "Suspense" but like the shows I mentioned they have a "twist ending".
It's a show that I enjoy -but not as much as the ones I mentioned before.
Note: the sound quality of some of these shows are bad but still worth a listen.
