The "Kyrenia Movement" was inaugurated during an evening of Theatro Technis' Cyprus Week 1988. The eventual result was the trip to London by the "Kyrenia Choir" which attended a demonstration at Trafalgar Square, handed a petition in to Margaret Thather's 10 Downing Street, and performed an evening at the Shaw Theatre opposite Camden Town Hall.
Video of the "Kyrenia Liberty" ship (a reconstruction based on the remains of the ancient ship discovered off the coast of Kyrenia during the early 70's by Andreas Kariolou), and its voyage to deliver traditional gifts from Cyprus to the host city during the Athens 2004 Olympics -- can be seen at:
Kyrenia is the town on the northern coast of Cyprus which saw the brunt of the landings by the Turkish military forces during their invasion of the island in 1974 following the abortive coup by the Greek junta which had at that time ruled Greece.
The Greek Junta in Greece collapsed soon after, and was replaced by a democrastic government.
The Turkish forces of occupation still remain on the 37% of the island which they occupied in 1974, the people in those areas were subjected to thorough ethnic cleansing and were expelled from their homes, and 34 years later the EU has agreed to begin accession negotiations with Turkey despite the fact that the Turkish forces clearly still have no intention to leave!
