This collection of solo recordings was entirely arranged and/or composed on a 4 Track cassette tape recorder. Among the instruments and sound generators that Goff used to compose the music on 33 And A Third are:
electronic guitar and guitar effects pedals
electric organ
electric bass
micro moog synthesizer
acoustic guitar
various flutes
a toy train sounds and animal sounds generator
a Frippertronics-style tape loop system
loop cassette tapes (the type used in telephone answering machines)
metal garbage can
modified digital Casio keyboard
tongue drum
a six foot plywood board with plastic bottles of all sizes and electronic pickups attached
a collection of resonant metal objects
a collection of shakers
phonograph records played off-center at various speeds
radio broadcast audio
Some Further Specifics:
Track 1, ”This Guy’s In Love With You,” is a Goff interpretation of an original Burt Bacharach/Hal David song.
The themes behind Track 2, “Missing Cups,” were conceived by Goff and Will Flanagan (now Will Marston).
Track 3, “Jet Black Smoke,” contains live radio reports of the 1991 Oakland hills fire. Goff had to prepare to evacuate his Oakland apartment on Telegraph Avenue during the fire. Goff had dreamed the basic guitar melody of this piece during the night preceding the fire, and the acoustic guitar bits included in this piece were recorded on the morning before the fire started.
Track 4, “Garbage Dump,” is a Goff interpretation of an original song written by Charles Manson. This piece first appeared on a compilation of Charles Manson cover songs entitled, “Watching Satan,” released on cassette by Hypertonia World Enterprises of Norway in 1992.
Track 5, “It Doesn’t Matter,” was written for guitar/vocal arrangement by Goff in 1981. In 1987, the song was adapted for Frippertronics style tape loop performance by the San Francisco performing duo: Disism (Goff and Killr “Mark” Kaswan). The version archived here was the first public release to include the original lyrics.
Track 6, “Hurdy Gurdy Girl,” is based on a dream Goff dreamed in 1992.
Track 7, “The BART Incident,” is based on Goff’s witnessing of an attempted suicide on the tracks of the Bay Area Rapid Transit station in Berkeley.
Track 8, “Hurting For You,” is a Goff interpretation of an original song by Todd Rundgren.
Track 9, “You Can’t Do That,” Track 11, “And I Love Her,” and Track 16, “Hello Goodbye,” are all Goff interpretations of songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
Track 10, “Ugly Sickness,” was recorded while Goff had laryngitis.
Track 12, “Thring,” is built around a Frippertronics-style guitar tape loop improvisation.
Track 13, “For The Relief Of Pain,” is a sonically-embellished very old Anacin advertisement.
Track 14, “Top Of The World,” is a Goff interpretation of an original song written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. Since its creation, this piece has been a “hit” among Taped Rugs fans.
Track 15, “Odorono,” features Goff reading a very old and very verbose advertisement from a magazine.
The original 33 And A Third cassette album was released by Taped Rugs Productions in 1992. Some of the songs from 33 And A Third have appeared on retrospective tapes and CDR compilations of Goff’s solo recordings produced by Taped Rugs Productions and other labels.
