An elaborate art project in which Chris Allert gave away over 150 toy pianos by way of found token. Chris had thousands of brass tokens minted and hidden all around Olympia, WA. When you collected enough tokens, you could exchange them at one of three local businesses for a toy piano. Tokens could also be acquired by donating money to Works In Progress, the Port Militarization Defense Fund, and various other local non-profits. Check out toypiano.org for more info.
This documentary features interviews with Chris Allert, Olympia eccentrics, musicians, toy piano token hiders and collectors, as well as several performances and footage from the first toy piano recital at the Yes Yes art space.
I made this documentary single-handedly, begging rides and crew help from friends. Access to equipment varied drastically, but I did what I could. I recall lugging a handtruck loaded with a camera, lights, tripods, and cords onto the bus where I was promptly told to "never do that again."
This work is unfinished, but this is the cohesive cut I showed at the final recital.
