November 17, 2010 Subject:
remembrance day commnets and views on your show
listened in and the talk about Remembrance Day with your guests.
It was said that it's hard to get behind remembrance day that ones who should be against war should be the veterans organizations, the legion supports war etc, they purged themselves of anti war members. That one doesn't need to go to the cenotaph no more than one has to go to church to talk to God. some things like that.
I heard the same message from anther CHLY radio show years ago "Elephant talk" which was hosted by two anarchists. they said the same thing about Remembrance day, and that the host wore a poppy but with a "yellow star" in the middle, instead to represent "anarchism".
When i heard this show I wrote the legion and got a response saying ...
"No the legion nor the War amps support or promote war, but i guess that is why those that fought and died, so these hosts could have the freedom to say those things about the legion.
however we are upset that the hosts chose to vandalize the poppy which to all veterans represents the memory of the dead, same as a vandalizing a grave stone."
My comment to you, the after talking to Veterans, is same for the cenotaph, it's revered place of the memory of the dead, it's a place to connect with loss and respect for the dead, not as you perhaps and others seem to think of the ceremonies, and even remembrance day itself ...that of "respecting the troops overseas" and war efforts.
I read the veterans don't want it to be a civic holiday, it is supposed to be a normal day of activity except at the 11th the 11day the 11th month to stop from your everyday and remember the great loss.
