From IMDb: Charles Adare (Michael Wilding) arrives in Australia in 1831 with his uncle, the new governor (Cecil Parker). Unsuccessful in Ireland, Charles hopes to make his fortune in Sydney. He is befriended by Samson Flusky (Joseph Cotten), a prosperous ex-convict. Sam's wife, Lady Henrietta, "Hattie" (Ingrid Bergman), was a friend of Charles's sister in Ireland. Sam hopes that the young man will be able to cheer up his wife, who is a mentally unstable alcoholic. Meanwhile the attractive housekeeper, Milly (Margaret Leighton), secretly loves Sam, and encourages Hattie's drinking. Sam has been sent to an Australian prison after he confessed to a killing that Hattie actually committed. She had followed him and waited for his release. Charles's efforts to rehabilitate Hattie conflict with Milly's intentions. Eventually, Sam becomes jealous, and in a rage, accidentally shoots Charles. This time Hattie accepts the blame for the shooting. Milly, seeing her chances to win Sam slipping away, attempts to poison Hattie.

Subject: EXCELENT MOVIE!!!
Great movie, the acting is superb and believable.

I kept waiting to see what would happen next. I love Hitchcock, he always 'nails it' as far as mystery and suspance(?)go.

By the way doowopbob, you need to take a 'chill pill' yourself, never mind anyone else.

This movie is a must see! I love Michael Wilding, he is so cute, just like a teddy bear.

This story goes on for 2 hours, and will keep your interest to the end. You will enjoy every minute of it.

What has happened to movies? Why can't they make movies like the classics we see on this site?

Oh,forgot, the actors today have no substance. As well, they do not appreciate the fans, who made them rich and famous.

Just Saying,

Subject: Wow, that was a really great movie!
I really liked this one! And... boy is it long, clocking in at almost 2 hours.

It was big and colorful. The sets and costumes were exquisite. It had a good story-line that kept me both interested and guessing what was eventually going to happen. It had well-developed characters. It had drama, romance and a tinge of suspensefulness (thanks to the horrid housekeeper, Milly).

A great period/location piece (1830 Australia), and of course, Ingrid Bergman is outstanding.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VIEWING.

Subject: Excellent
It played well on my computer. I had a few problems downloading it till late oner night it downloaded fine. I had to convert it before it would copy on to my DVD disc (who knows why?), with a free http://www.any-video-converter.com/ . That is how I keep all my movie download files. A disc can hold many movies usually. CD's hold less.
It is really a Fine film.
I had to set the size on the convert to MPEG2, to one much the same fps and size. That can be a main problem when converting if it sets it otherwise automatically. Color and fine acting. The female lead didn't have the Irish accent that she needed but a European accent instead but she was a real trooper and carried it of fairly good.

Subject: Under Capricorn: Why this film is so important? (SPOILERS)
Hitchcock was interested in this film since 1944. He made it not just because Ingrid Bergman liked it. He also liked the idea how mystery and intensity of the Drama was used.

This film wasn't a thriller. This film was Mystery/Drama.

Like Rope, Under Capricorn was taken in long takes. But unlike Rope, Under Capricorn's long takes were taken differently.

According to Writer Ed Gallafent, the use of the long take in Under Capricorn relates to 3 elements of film’s meaning.

1.Ideas of accessible and inaccessible space as expressed in the gothic house.

2.The form in which character inhabit their past

3.The divergence or convergence of eyelines – the gaze that cannot, or must meet another’s.

All of these three elements can be linked to concepts of Guilt and Shame. In 1 and 2, the question is how something is felt to be present. In 3, it is difference between representation or sharing, of the past as flashback, and of the past as spoken narrative, where part of what is being articulated is precisely the inaccessibility of the past, its experience being locked inside the speaker.

As for 3, the avoided gaze is determining physical sign of shame.

Some of Symbolisms are related to St. Mary Magdalene.

Here are the examples - St. Mary Magdalene (the patron saint of penitent sinners) in religious iconography: the bare feet, skull, the flail, the looking glass in which beholder’s is not always reflected, the jewels cast down to floor.

All of these things are seen throughout the film.

Sources for such imagery that Hitchcock might perfectly well have had in mind are the paintings St. Mary Magdalene with a candle (1630 to 1635) and St. Mary Magdalene with a Mirror (1635 -1645)

"Minyago Yugilla" means Why weepest thou?

Most of the informations are from this section “The Dandy and Magdalene: interpreting the long take in interpreting the long take in Hitchcock’s Under Capricorn (1949)” by Ed Gallafent.

Also "Green" represents Ireland (A Place of Hope). Michael Wilding uses "Green" coat to show the reflection of Lady Henrietta in the mirror scene. This is related to St. Mary Magdalene. It is in the religious iconography section.

Hitchcock also takes this Mirror scene and connects the scene to literatary elements.

Hitchcock used some elements from Romeo and Juliet and Alice in Wonderland. For Example, Michael Wilding climbing to the top like "Romeo" to Lady Henrietta who is on the bed.

Not only that, He used some elements from sequel of Alice in Wonderland. The sequel's name is "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There".

In this story, there are many mirror themes, including "time running backwards", opposites, and so on.

"Time running backwards" represents " Great and Wonderful Times in Ireland". Charles Adare's Green Coat is another example.

Everyone calls Henrietta "Hattie". And everyone thinks that she is mad. That reminds me of "Mad Hatter" in Alice in Wonderland.

There are more. But Its long already. So I will stop here. Its a great movie once the viewer get to know the meaning of the film. And one of the major themes of this film is "The Mystery of Human personality".
