This programme features a discussion about the history of sculptural interventions upon the vinyl record by both prominent and lesser-known artists. Also featured is an overview of many of the conceptual and technical innovations by experimental turntablists across the world. This is a very intriguing, unique collection of experimental turntablism and 'vinyl interventions', peppered with insightful commentaries about the artists and their processes.
This recording is part three of four from a 2 hour radio documentary commissioned by Winnipeg's annual experimental and electronic music festival, send + receive. The programme was aired on CKUW 95.9 FM and UMFM 101.5FM during the 8th edition of send + receive in October 2005 as part of the "Sonic Emmisions" radio art component of the festival. The documentary was made by Saskatoon-based experimental turntablist, art historian, and curator, Carrie Gates.
Carrie Gates has been working with turntablism, radio, experimental music, performance art, video, and event coordination for the last decade, while promoting artist-run culture, collaborative projects, and trans-local community building through her performances, networking, research activities, and advocacy for DIY culture. Active in the vibrant mid-90s rave scene onwards, she is known to some as Lady Gates for her unique approaches to DJing and performance.
