How does Waterdeep feel about live recording?
Waterdeep allows and encourages the recording of their performances. People are then encouraged to trade the performances with each other. If money is exchanged, we ask that it be only to cover the cost of the postage and materials (blank tapes, CDRs, tape covers). In other words, no profit should be made by anyone.
How does Waterdeep feel about reproduction of the studio albums?
This is a no-no. If we invested money into a project and took the time to mix, master, and manufacture a product, then it's only fair that you buy the songs from us. If you're a poor college student, but really want to hear a song, then go find an MP3 of a live recording and download it for free.
What about a live recording like "Live at the New Earth"?
Again, if we spent money on a recording to enhance the sound, and if it was an official Waterdeep release, then please don't duplicate it. If, however, you were there and recorded the show yourself or something, then you can freely distribute it. If that's the case, then the answer to question # 1 would apply.
What are the official "Archive Picks" CDs, and can I copy them?
The Archive Picks CDs are selected performances from the Waterdeep archive masters that we decided to burn some discs of. We sell them occasionally for a minimal mark-up, and all of the profit goes back into maintaining the archives. Since these are made directly from the original recordings and aren't mixed or mastered, you're free to copy these as well.
How can I buy copies of the official "Archive Picks?
These CDs are not regularly available for purchase. Occasionally we'll have some for sale at a concert, you'll just have to show up and check. Also, if you post on the message boards a lot then someone just might contact you about them, but remember: Don't call us, we'll call you.
How do I get access to any other recordings in the archives?
Because of time restraints, we don't make copies of these recordings for the general public. However, we have a few people set up as official Archive Distributors. Every so often these people receive 2nd generation or even digitally copied recordings from the archives, which they in turn duplicate for the "public." They each deal in various media depending on what they have access to, but the most predominant are MD, CDR, and good old fashioned cassette tapes. They generally focus on helping "newbies" by making copies in exchange for blanks or the cash equivalent, but they will also trade sometimes if you've got something of interest to them. They might also let you in on a "taping tree." (see below) The best way to contact them is to post on the message boards at www.waterdeep.com & www.waterdeep.net (or wherever fine mesage boards grow) and let them email you, or to look at old messages on the boards, figure out who the distributors are, and contact them via email. They each have their own equipment, methods and preferences. (ie. some make tapes, some CDRs; some limit orders to 2 shows at a time, etc.) Just ask them how they do things and request a list of what shows they have, and hopefully they'll hook you up. But be patient, and keep in mind that they're all doing this in their spare time as a hobby.
What is a taping tree?
In a taping tree, someone agrees to make you a certain amount of copies to get you started. You, in exchange, promise to make the same number of copies w/ the same arrangement for someone else, and on down the line.
Can I become an official "Archive Distributor?"
Yes. You need to have 3 things: time; regular access to good equipment; and a working knowledge of the whole technical process. (ie. you know not to dub on high speed and to use high bias tapes, etc.) It also helps if you're pretty familiar with Waterdeep's material. Of course, the latter things you can learn. Email jason@waterdeep.com if you're interested and we'll try to give you some tips.
What kind of media do traders prefer?
Everybody has their own preference, but most tapers prefer Maxell XLII or XLIIS (high bias) 90 min. tapes. You can ask the person and see if other brands or lengths are acceptable. Most people will tell you that mini-discs, cdrs, and DAT are all the same, so it might not matter on those. Again, you might ask. Try www.ttapes.com or www.tape.com if you're looking for a place to order good blanks. They should have everything from DAT to MD at good prices.
What is Waterdeep's stance on MP3s?
The answers to questions 1-4 would apply here. If it's a studio or official release like "Live at the New Earth," then don't do it. If it's live stuff that you recorded yourself or traded for, then MP3 away. Just keep it free.
