Reviewer:Fudgedubnofunk - - March 8, 2007 Subject: Review - RAH! Unwrite These – Like the glitchy fx + the contrast with the gorgeous laid back acoustic guitar. Crackin 1st track … which sets the scene v nicely. Rat-t-at beats work well. Tune has a v cool atmos with lots of elements … gets kinda busy after 1:30, but all the sounds/instruments have their place + fit together well. I like v much the fact that there’s lots of noise in there, but it’s controlled + all the time the guitar provides a luverly central focus to the track. AWESOME.
Hurry – More laid back guitar + scuzzy noises. Sounds like you’ve got a type-writer in there! Scary distorted noise/beat that joins the mix after 18secs adds a harder edge to the proceedings. As per track 1 the layers in this track are built up really rather nicely + after a min or so things start to get more intense, although you’ve held things back well + the chilled vibe is retained throughout. Reverse sound fits in nicely + adds to the controlled intensity. Organised chaos … track reminds me a bit of God Speed You Black Emperor! or Sonic Youth gone acoustic.
Gregor, The Blacksmith – This one starts off more noisily … how do you make these noises? This one’s a bit more like the stuff you used to do, albeit a bit less chaotic + f**ked. Luverly noises rip up the earlobes … argh! Yeah baby, I like this v v much … industrial techno vibe from 1:30 adds a diff dimension … kinda expecting an EXPLOSION at some point – BANG – RAH!!! I have listened to this EP several times, but this track hasn’t jumped out at me till now … I think it’s because this is the 1st time I’ve actually sat down and listened to it (rather than being on my walk to work). Anyway, this is DRAMATIC … sounds like you’ve got an orchestra in + they’re rocking up and down in a small fishing boat in the middle of a storm in the North Sea – cool.
Orchanic – Like the change from noise to something more laid back. Interesting choice of sounds to do yer glitching with … which is cool with these ears. Am only just catching up meself + going for the trad C64 sounds, so it’s good to hear something fresh. This one’s quite sparse + minimal + is kinda weird. Not one of my faves, but I like the ideas/vibe.
Angle Smoother – Back to more trad jingly-jangling guitars … this one’s kinda indie – rah! Takes a little while to get going, but you can hear something build + at some point it’s gonna go “WHACK!”. Things start to happen around 1:20, then BOMB … love the riffage. This turns into a right beast. Crashing cymbals work well too. Another DRAMATIC tune, that to me has this “sea/storm” vibe about it … makes me think of big waves + rain, etc. Cool track.
As is untitled – More noise vs acoustic guitars …. in a similar vein to track 1, although I think the glitchiness takes over a bit more. I like v much the weird fx used … the track seems quite empty, but that’s cool … gives me visions of being holed up in some BIG warehouse in the dark! Again the intensity gradually builds … hmmmm, there’s deffo a theme here … all yer trax are quite progressive …
… which means to me this EP is about the right length, any longer + it might start to get a bit dull. What’s here is good though + you do the mash-up of real instruments vs scary noise v well. I like the changing moods too + even with the aggressive guitars in ‘… Smoother’ the whole thing retains a chilly-mellow vibe to these ears. Reminds me a bit of Zan Lyons. ENJOYED + must burn to CD.
