Sixty Years Later...
After Christopher published this book he spent a period of time promoting it around the USA. It wasn't a normal book tour, many of the towns he visited were small specs on the map, just like many of the locations he describes in the book. In my case, the town had a population of only 500, a few of them eight year old boys...like me! He kept his audience of kids and adults enthralled with his stories for well over an hour. It must have been good, I'm still relating that presentation six decades later.
The book is truly fun to read. Christopher's trek through many of the world's inhospitable countries was amazing. In retrospect it is incomprehensible that those same countries are today almost the same culturally. The natives may now have cell phones and have a better understanding of Americas, but they are still warily hosting the traveling stranger.
The entire premise is totally a 1950's experience, and the book really worth the time. Enjoy!
