Subject: Finally
Not being able to see ASMZ live yet, I depend on this archive for my fix. I had to wait 5 months, but a new show is finally here! It feels like I'm meeting back up with old friends.
Let's start with the first thing you notice: the sound quality, which is amazing. Along with the 4/14/07-Belgium show, this is probably the best audio I've ever heard in an ASMZ bootleg. It's studio quality. If I didn't already know this was live, I would think these were album performances until I heard the applause at the end of each song.
The bad news is that, according to Efrim's banter, it appears that Ian and Becky are now out of the band, which makes me sad. On the first song, "13 Blues For Thirteen Moons," it seems obvious enough to me that their dynamics are missing. In addition, the much slower ending to that song in this recording makes me miss the older performances, in which that final crescendo was a fiery jazz explosion. I wonder if that's just the way they played it tonight, or if that's what it really sounds like anymore.
On the other hand, there are some songs on which I can't even tell the two members are gone, such as the excellently played "1,000,000 Died to Make This Sound." That song really is stronger than ever. Two older songs, "Horses In the Sky" and "Take These Hands And Throw Them In the River," are back in the set, and the band continues to find new dynamics to add to them even though they've already been around for years. Both are beautiful and convincing.
So even though this is not my favorite version of "13 Blues," and even though "Metal Bird" (which I love dearly) was not played, the rest of the performances are excellent, and the sound quality is more clear than you could ask for, which makes me feel compelled to give this show nothing less than 5 stars.
