LibriVox recording of Australia Felix, by Henry Handel Richardson. Read by tabithat.
The story of Richard Mahony, a doctor trained in Edinburgh who comes to Ballarat in the gold rush of the 1850s. At first he runs a shop but later he marries and returns to medical practice. His story is interwoven with that of his wife's brothers and sister. Even after his medical practice becomes successful he is still unhappy living in the colony and decides to return home to Britain. Richard is a restless irritable man whose character is said to be based on the author's own father. This book is the first of the trilogy 'The Fortunes of Richard Mahony', but stands well on its own. The other two books of the trilogy are still protected by copyright in the USA, but may be found on Project Gutenberg Australia. (Summary by tabithat)

Challenging look at marriage and developing mental illness
I chose to listen to this book because I was interested in the Australian gold rush. On that score, the book succeeds. It is an interesting tale of life in the diggings and gives a fascinating picture of the colony and the ups and downs of the odd mix of people who live there.
As I progressed through the book though, I found it more and more troubling. It is far more than a tale of life as a doctor in the colony. As Richard's personality unfolds, it's clear that he is a troubled man who is more and more loosing touch with those around him. As I neared the end of this volume, I found that Richard and his relationship with Polly hit a bit too close to home, reminding me of several friends over the years whose marriages have been impacted by the instability or unreasonableness of their spouse. It is a well written book, but not for those who are sensitive to the issues surrounding domineering husbands or the precursors of mental illness.
Tabithat does an excellent job reading this solo project.
