Subject: A relatively modern witness to the Bible's background.
Reverend MacKie wrote this as the 20th century was about to begin. He had served 20 years as a missionary in Beirut for the Church of Scotland. Because not much had changed in the region's rural lifestyle between then and Bible times, he enlightening draws on his own observations of contemporary manners and customs to provide background for the experiences Bible authors were drawing on in preparing the scriptures.
