William Morfill [1834-1909] M.A., Ph.D., D.Litt., born at Maidstone Kentucky, Professor of Russian and Slavonic languages - University of Oxford; he travelled extensively in Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Georgia and elsewhere to compile grammars, dictionaries and cultural histories.
1889 – officially recognized Reader in Russian at Oxford University.
1900 – Professor of Russian and Slavonic Languages - Oxford University.
1903-08 – awarded honorary Doctorate - Charles University, Prague.
