Notes
Show held in honor of Dave Graham's 21st birthday. The son of legendary rock impresario Bill Graham, Dave was part of Music Unlimited, the band's management at the time.
- Slight overloading in right channel at the beginning of track 1, some
kick drum overloading in the left channel of tracks 2 and 4. This is
on the only other tape I've seen in circulation; another source is
unlikely given the show's location and age.
- Some balloon pops in the background, one big one at the end of track 3.
- Track 4 begins with an instrumental "Happy Birthday" and cuts out
at the end; I faded it out.

Don't be so sure, Dave!!!
I'm the mystery taper who recorded this; I'm pretty sure I still have the master. However, the overloading you hear is on the master, so it won't sound much different -- I briefly checked out the stream here, and it sounds pretty much like it does on the master. I wasn't very happy with it at the time. With the tape, that is - the gig itself was a wonderful, magical experience. Like Springfest 4/13/89, Dreamspeak was the other band on the bill; I forget who went first. The show was on a large boat, similar to a Circle Line, which cruised around NY harbor not far from the Statue of Liberty.
Needless to say, when Bill Graham puts on a private party to celebrate his oldest son's 21st birthday, it's an affair to remember. The concert was held inside, because there was a threatening rain. After we docked, Bill told me that he had originally wanted to have the show on the top deck, but had to move it inside because of the chance of rain. He was a little disappointed, and I don't blame him -- as great as it was, it would have been even SICKER if it was on the top deck.
Some technical notes:
- It's not a SBD. Soundboards in small indoor places sound terrible, IMHO. I set up mics in front of the speakers, probably SM-57s. Don't get snobby on me, I was a poor college student struggling to find ways to make listenable tapes on limited funds, I didn't have $1000+ for Scheops or Neumans. So it's overloaded, but at least the mix is OK. (If it was a SBD, you would not be able to hear Chan at all, since I'm sure he was non-existant in the PA mix) Honestly, that distorted sound is kinda what it really sounded like, it was loud and raucous, and lots of fun. Have a lot to drink before you listen to it, so it sounds to you like it did to us :-)
- I'm 90% sure it was recorded on my Sony TC-D5M (which Sony gave to Bill Graham, who gave it to David, who gave it to me -- how's that for a FunFact!)
- Chan was playing Dreamspeak guitar player Matt Zekala's Sea-Foam Green '62 reissue Strat, since Chan's guitar was broken or missing or something)
I'll try to find some time to digitize this from the master -- anybody out there in the SF Bay Area want to give me a hand? (I'd be looking for somebody who has a studio or some kind of DAW with better A/D converters than I have)
