Subject: Inventive and brisk, but still loose and relaxed.

This one has all the charm, comfort, and authenticity of a good old outdoor NorCal show, but Bob and the boys were still clearly there to push the envelope and steal some faces. Jack Straw and the Ashes > Don't Let Go > Ashes sandwich really prove that they came to play, but stuff like the standalone Big River and the moody Let It Grow really give the first set some fangs as well. The second set is just ridiculous - you keep thinking each passing song is the sure highlight, but then whatever's next in line makes you think again. It's especially impressive how each song in that He's Gone > Tomorrow Never Knows > Estimated > Other One > Days Between sequence unfolds into the next. Outstanding! They had to close the show with two rockers just to shake the bay area fans out of their trance. Jay Lane is really off the hook. Bob's in fine form with strong vocals and plenty of intriguing guitar tones and tricks up his sleeve. Don Was packs some punch in the second set, but I wish he was just a little louder throughout the whole thing. Overall this a great recording of one of the Wolf Bros' modern classics!
