The music of Hollydrift integrates technology, the human voice, calculated soft electronics, found sound, and rhythm. In the four tracks of the Halting Gait EP, Hollydrift maintains this signature sound while making impressionistic ambient textures constructed into overt unapologetic emotional gothic tableaux framed by steady rhythms. Choral voices resemble medieval motets while recalling shimmering sheets of sound ala shoegaze. Through it all, unintelligible singing voice samples weave in and out of focus communicating the melancholy and chaos against a background of looping introspection. This EP marks a new period in the band’s artistic development. Gone now are the noise collages and in their place, an expansive sonic landscape from a land of clouds and snow.
Hollydrift is Mathyas Erin Anderson, an audio artist who lives and works in Ozaukee County Wisconsin. For many years Mathyas created noise/sound collage but has permanently abandoned that genre for a smeary shoegaze form of darkwave using synthesizers, drum machines, found sounds, and human voice. Mathyas is not a musician as much as a music sculptor; bringing musical elements together that don’t always match or fit a popular sonic model of proper music.
