This is another 1-off copy BUT -- this is the first time Charles ever played the monster 88-key Rhodes in Tom's studio hooked up to the PA where he could really push it. I think we had just picked up the keyboard from Main Street Music that day. His excitement is contagious. The first song on the tape (late start) is When a Man Loves a Woman and at the end Charles is going " Yeah baby, yeah baby, yeah. You hear that baby tremble. Yes Lord!". And so the Rhodes becomes his baby that he plays for the next several years, coaxing out many a lovely song or driving it hard on the rockers.

Second track is Rock Me Baby; and it sounds like Harty has plugged in to play along and then the rest of the Boys get going. Tracks 3 - 5 are Tobacco Road. The Casio now sits atop the Rhodes but I get caught off guard when he nails an organ part near the end. 2nd take they try a different key and work thru parts. 3rd try and the organ is still too hot but one of us adjusts.

Last song is Troubles - something Tom came up with for the release "Animal Called the Blues". Track 6 ends with Charles having some fun doing it as a slow blues song. That gets Charles excited and when the Boys come back from break, he's ready for some new variations to the song. The last take, after a false start, is probably the best.

Charles also performed at Gretchen Everhart Special Education School in Tallahassee on this day; a little thing for staff and students with songs like Stand By Me, Light Up My Life, Wings Beneath My Wings, Lean On Me (which would go on forever as he "called on" all those present). So it was a special day all around. I have 2 tapes of it but don't know if I will post to archives - maybe someday after everything else is up.

Feb. 2009 Rolling on thru the Practice Sessions - 2 more to go.... Enjoy! SCopeland
