Don't know what to say about this practice session. Like 12-10 & 12-17, I only have the end of the session that was on a second cassette. Actually the ends of 12-03 and 12-10 are on the same cassette. I wasn't taking notes back then but guess the missing 1st tape was some standard covers for the next gig. So - the end of this night brings out some new songs that the band will get very familiar with over the next year.
Track 1 - New Train - a lesson in how to build a song. 2nd track is getting there; 3rd is more figuring and the 4th is close to finished. Altho there are many more versions in the future, I don't think New Train was ever played at a gig. (ed. Today I heard the song this is derived from - Night Train; heavy on horns/sax and not as many train stops.)
Nothing Takes the Place of You is one of my favorite Charles songs. There are a few glitches here but it's cool. Ditto for Wish It Would Rain & Let's Go - these songs are the soul of Charles. Think back to the Florida School of Deaf and Blind when he first found his voice, or his early time on the circuit - these were the songs one would know.
Unchain My Heart got in here since Charles couldn't "get the words" for Feeling Alright; and he calls out the chords in between the verse. As the Boys wind down for the night, Charles starts up the Jackie Wilson song, Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher, and looks for a faster rhythm. The Fa Fa song is great, again the 60s soul (Otis for ever!). It has some distortion when Larry steps in and I had already turned up the board to get the beginning softness, then over-corrected. In the last minute Professor Charles gives us the progression - test next week.
The last track is what you get when you reuse tapes. Sounds good - hope I have more of that tape when I get back to the live gigs soon. About 5 more practices to go thru.
Jan 2009 Had a great hike with the Florida Trail Association around near Bristol / Torreya today. Burnt to blistering hands are healing fine - TY. Enjoy! SCopeland
