Short session - there may have been another cassette (with this being the last 15 songs on a second) but it's long gone unless Harty saved the tapes he had. At this point I was just getting serious about organizing and documenting the sessions. So, no drummer or bass player tonight - and the session ends with the guys talking about just that, throwing out names like Stretch on drums or Randy Barnhill on bass.

The mix tonight favors Charles, like on the first track Merry Christmas Baby - great vocals. (tracks 2-5) I guess some of these covers are just being introduced as Charles will call out the chords; altho you hear them many times over the next year until they become automatic.

Absolutely love Sweet Little Angel - once Charles finds his key (G). Harty even finds a good lead and Larry is right on. The Midnight Special is an instrumental. New Train starts out "on the wrong beat" which Harty then slows down. Funny how later versions end up going faster tho. Track 9 gets everyone laughing over "Houston - Delaware". Didn't realize Sit In was a BB King song - it gets played later in the sessions with Matt and RC. Charles demos it for the Boys here. After that is Larry scatting along with Charles on Don't Get Around Much Anymore, with Tom playing rhythm.

The last 2 tracks are Charles solo as the Boys talk in the background. Something different for Charles and a chance to show off his keyboard playing.

January 2009 My old, sad iBook (yeah, just over 3 years old) is just about DEAD. UPloads are fraught with Finder timeouts and such. It's been a good litte mac tho. Enjoy! SCopeland
