Subject: Change in Practice Series
This marks a midpoint in the posting of practice sessions. 3-7 to 7-5-93 was first batch posted a year ago; then a bunch of live gigs from 92. If you are browsing thru, don't always follow the highest download counts. Some of these later postings are going to be just as good. Yeah - but I'd stay away from that "Mother" with a download of 4 . . . .

and there is some good stuff on this one too.

Notes:
This night featured Matt's dad in town for a visit (I believe the Thibeaults were from New Hampshire and I'm guessing this is the same Russ mentioned here www.thespectras.com/history.htm). Not sure if Charles' blues style is what Russ normally played; he may have been more jazz or swing or something but anyway the boys did what they could to pick songs he could play, and with lots of space. So all in all, it was more than a usual practice.

The mix is off on the first couple tunes but then things settle down quite nicely and everyone is together and having fun. And Charles, as always, is teaching the blues as he sings. On track 3 Kansas City, Harty steps on Charles vocals coming in - no biggie - practice always has little mistakes. Good take on Stormy Monday and by track 6, things are really cooking. What Does It Take is a song Charles had been trying to work in lately and having the sax tonight is just what he wanted to get the groove on.

I always thought Tossin' and Turnin' was a fairly simple song - at least to me out front and usually dancing - but it takes some practice to get the stops down. After all that work, Charles slows it down for Lean On Me. This is followed by Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher, which they are still learning. The last take is cool altho future versions are better as they got their parts down and Larry's backup vocals expanded. This is followed by Sugar Sweet, which turns into an extended jam. Charles really likes it and shouts out a satisfied "YEAH" at the end and we all crack up. Last track features Russ on his song Clean Head Blues - something I'm sure he had performed many a time.

Jan. 08 - continuing on with the Practice Sessions. 3-7-93 was the first I digitized and then worked forward to 7-5-93. So now this is going backwards from 3-7. I still may redo 3-7 and 3-11 as I know more about the software now. Enjoy this one! -SCopeland
