Notes

Players:
Charles Atkins - keyboards and vocals
The Blues Boys
Larry Laseur - harmonica
Harty Wiedemann - guitar
Tom Henning - guitar
with Matt Thiebault - bass & RC - drums

Another night of working thru the usual covers with some originals near the end. Sound is mixed well overall and Matt and RC and the Boys are real comfortable with this material so despite a few goofs, it's all pretty good. Late start on the first track but with this nice slow tune, it' a good way to start the eve. Things pick up with FFF while Green Grass has a bad start on guitar ("It's in E") but the rest is good. Track 4 sounds like I was late on the tape and did a fade in. Short version of Knock on Wood but kudos to RC for getting the knocks down. On to Little Bit and Little Bit of Love; aka Teeny Weeny Bit and All I Want - my names just so I could differentiate the two and keep my notes straight.

Great vocals on track 8 - Man's World; too bad I missed the start. Charles is warmed up now and Nothing Takes the Place of You gets the full treatment; good harp work by Larry. This is followed by Shake Rattle Roll - my notes say something about a new start on this. Then a short version of St James Infirmary just so everyone knows the breaks and the ending. Track 13 has a tape split in it about halfway thru - too bad as it's a good version of Stop Doggin' Me Around.

Anyone notice that we're going thru the set list alphabetically? Stormy Monday starts out good and then trails off just as "the eagle flies on Friday" so Charles goes back to noodling as the Boys talk. Sugar Sweet used to get played a lot as did Tossin' and Turnin' - this has a couple misstarts and the usual what key discussion. Track 11 Tobacco Road is well-done except for the "1-4" part which is why they practice. After this, Charles has to talk his way into Two Women, still struggling with his words and then he walks thru it again with I think Harty on guitar. Track 19 is another of their recent made-up tunes. This one is getting well-polished but I don't think it ever made it to a gig. Ditto for Rolling Time - real late start on tape here but it's still over 7 minutes.

Runaround and Reputation are original releases from Animal Called the Blues; this version of Reputation is one of the better takes so far with Matt and RC. Tonight's tape closes with Down Home Blues and Thrill Up On the Hill. At the end, it sounds like Matt wanted to keep going, and they may have. My notes list Everyday I Have the Blues, That's Allright, Movin' On, Night Time is the Right Time, and Rock Me Baby. Wish I had stuck another tape in.
