Subject: Seeds of the Post Quake Academy
It's interesting that these volumes represent the rebuilding of the vast collection of scientific specimens lost in the Great Fire after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. The 1905-06 Galapagos expedition sponsored by the California Academy of Sciences brought back over 78000 specimens. Cal Academy was located on Market Street in 1906 and while it initially survived the quake the encroaching fire engulfed the entire building. Only a few things were saved by some brave curators before the building burned as brilliantly told in the book Collecting Evolution: The Galapagos Expedition that Vindicated Darwin by Matthew J. James
