Over 2 million children in America have a mother or father in jail or prison. These children have committed no crime but often experience emotional and societal challenges as a result. Rona and guests, Nell Bernstein, author of All Alone in the World: Children of the Incarcerated, and Karen Shain, Co-Director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, will discuss how we can respond to the needs of children who have a parent in prison.

Nell Bernstein is an award-winning journalist and author of the book, All Alone in the World: Children of the Incarcerated. Her writings have appeared in numerous national publications, including Glamour, Health, Marie Claire, Mother Jones, Salon.com, and the Washington Post. Ms. Bernstein is also the coordinator of the San Francisco Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership, a coalition group working to improve the lives of children of incarcerated parents.
Karen Shain has over 25 years of experience in working with and for prisoners and their families. She is the Co-Director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the human rights and empowerment of incarcerated parents, children, family members and people at risk for incarceration. Ms. Shain is also on the Community Adjunct Faculty of the San Francisco State University Masters of Public Health program.
