Notes:
For BARN72, the next installment in my archival recording series, I have finally decided to dig into some of Spin Doctors related material I've recorded over a many many year period. The Spin Doctors were the first jamband that I really got into (years before they had their huge radio hits or even had an album out for that manner). Instead of going straight for some classic Spins, a lot of which is already in circulation, let's start with something different -- a Chris Barron solo acoustic show.
After they were already one of the biggest bands in the world, the Spin Doctors managed to come back down to Earth and Eric Schenkman left the band. They hired 2 guitarists in succession (Anthony Krizan and Eran Tabib) and Ivan Neville to play keys (for a while), and played a BUNCH of small shows back where they got their start at the Nightingale Bar, trying to get their "mojo" back. They even released 3 CDs during the "dark ages" without Eric (the material they wrote during this time period has dropped into the collective unconsciousness of the band). In addition Chris Barron used to pop in for a show there on occasion, and this is one of them. (Luckily, when the Spins do play these days, it is just the original lineup).
Things you can hear clearly during the course of this show: People chattering about random stuff (well for the 1st 40 minutes or so). The cash register every time someone pays for a drink. Glasses clinking as they are cleared. The balls crashing into each other on pool table. The front door opening and closing. Occasional distortion coming out of the PA system. Strange occasional bursts of loud volume (which I have tried to minimize). Oh and the really loud, nearby claps that I went through the recording and removed the worst of one-by-one.
If you've got headphones on listen to the cool stereo singalong near the end of Gorilla Boy which Chris asks the left side of the room to sing one part and the right side to sing another.
This show is a great overview of Chris' career at the time -- you've got some of the earliest songs he ever wrote (Teddy, Providence, Norma Jean, A Taste of Joanie), some brand new songs from the time (Let's Try Again, Needle In My Mind), some DEEP and rarely performed ("holy sh*t, is he really playing this?") Spin Doctors cuts (Gorilla Boy, Cop That The Robber, A Piece Of Glass), some tunes from the height of the Spins popularity (Mary Jane, Laraby's Gang), and a once-off (as far as I can tell) cover of Some Enchanted Evening.
All in all it is a very loose performance with Chris comfortable and having fun, an interested crowd (well at least once the chatter quiets down about 1/2 way through the show) having fun bantering with Chris and calling for more and more, not letting him leave the stage (Chris initally starts saying he's going to wrap it up about 40 minutes into this nearly 80 minute set). Unforunately there's not a ton I can do about the sound which was all over the place and relatively thin. This place was a dump, and had a soundsystem befitting a dump.
Also, there were 2 brief cuts in the recording during the encore break, which, I believe, were due to a battery change and then a DAT tape change, as Chris played a lot longer than I thought he would.
Some people I can clearly hear in the audience: myself (twice), David Landsberger, Jesse Jarnow (I *think*). Let me know if you can identify yourself in this recording....
If you're paying attention, the next release in my BARN series will be another 1997 Chris Barron show, as it road along on the coattails of this one because they were on the same DAT tape. So if you like this one, there's another similar one (albeit with slightly better sound) coming very soon!
Enjoy!
Scott
