Subject: If only Barry Melton was there.............
The sound quality here is very good, almost excellent. The quality is so good that I can set consideration of it aside and hone in on the music. If only Barry was there playing lead guitar, this would actually sound like and BE a Country Joe and the Fish reunion. Upon first listening, any hope of Barry's participation is dashed when the lead guitar comes in, apparently played by Cohen. Cohen on lead sounds about as good as the VERY young 1967 Barry Melton at his worse. Cohen should at least pump up the reverb; it would add a lot to the illusion of the sound of the original Country Joe and the Fish. Barry Melton was an essential part of C.J. & the Fish. Having said that, his former band-mates do an excellent job here of recalling those days, and the Country Joe Band is a damn good band. I have no idea what happened between Joe and Barry, but my guess is Barry was so much younger than Joe when they began that he may have come to think he was being taken advantage of as he got older and better, or some other "bad blood." Or perhaps it was more between Barry and the other guys, as the last Country Joe and the Fish studio album, CJ Fish, was Joe and Barry backed by some good session musicians. And the live album from close to the end that was resurrected and released several years ago has Jack Cassady on bass. Or maybe it WAS college and Law school, although Law school seems to be slightly too far down the road, but then again maybe it took that long. To Barry's credit, on his web page, he lists Joe's web page in his list of favorite web sites. Joe on the other hand, lists the web sites of every former member of Country Joe & the Fish EXCEPT Barry. Whatever happened between Joe and Barry, this is a damn good concert by a damn good band desperately in need of a lead guitarist. I'm sure any C.J. and the Fish fan will enjoy this, but I am not labeling this music as "Fans only." Except for the lead guitar, this is great psychedelic blues-rock, and Joe is as good as ever. If you want to hear Barry, there are several shows by The Barry Melton Band on the archive. There was a time when C.J. and the Fish seemed like they could be BIG, believe it or not kids. They are still legendary and their music defines the late 60s. I can't help but wonder how much further Barry and Joe would have went if they would have stayed together, whatever "further" means, and have always thought they would have broken out of cult status (if they wanted to). Joe had the recognition, and of course was absolutely essential to C.J. and the Fish, but he and Barry had one of those synergistic Lennon and McCartney or Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour things going on, and the entire band together was much better than the sum of it's parts. But no doubt they did what they had to do. This document shows that the old band minus Barry still rocks; this is a very good, fun concert; don't expect virtuosity or complexity, just some good psychedelic rock with soul and meaningful political statements on occasion. I loved these guys when I was in Jr. High School and I still do, even Fishless. Rock on, dudes! And uh, send Barry a card maybe, or some flowers? Y'all should kiss babies and make up, IMHO, which I am guessing is not possible. So WTF, rock on, Joe, Chicken, Bruce & Dave! Add a decent lead guitarist maybe? Or Dave, add some reverb and work on the blues-scale solos just a bit and you'll have it! You dudes did something important and some of us still love you for it. Peace.

Subject: Great concert ... part of track 1 missing
Great concert, some old faves and a couple of newies showing Country Joe still has what it takes.

Pity that there is a gap between each of the tracks, and that the MD ran out just before the 6 minute mark on the first track. Otherwise, this is first rate!

Notes

Day Three of the cjb trek around the UK saw them in
Falmouth as part of a multi-billed event also featuring
Arthur Brown and the Muffin Men. As a result, they only
played a comparatively short set.

This is an extremely clear SBD, which is fast becoming
one of my favourite recordings of the tour. I haven't
altered the tracking as it may already be out in limited
circulation.

Line-up:

Country Joe McDonald - guitar, harmonica, vocals
Bruce Barthol - bass, vocals
David Bennet Cohen - keyboards, guitar
Gary "Chicken" Hirsch - drums

Please support Joe and the band by buying their latest release
"Live in Berkeley", which is now available from the website:
countryjoe.com; I got a copy on the tour and the version of
Grace on it is gorgeous!!
