Mickey Braun. a young man who is in the jet core has storm phobia and all of a sudden is yanked out of service, so begins Clipped Wings a film that dives headfirst into ridiculousness shortly after its dramatic beginning. Shortly after hes kicked out, he meets a girl, Molly and her shifty ex-pilot brother Raoul, played so feyly by Jason Robards (!!) you almost feel hes playing Paul Lynde. Soon, Paul Lynde.. er. Robards gets a telegram, and has to get back to his country home But Molly is suspicious of his brother, so Mickey and Molly (!!) decide to follow Raoul back to the country house to see whats going on. From there its anyones guess what the hell is happening. Theres an oil smuggling ring going on, an FBI agent who is undercover with the gang, the even seedier leader of the gang, the Mexican assistant and so on. So much plot is going on, and so much stuff is thrown at you, and sort of left dangling (whatever became of the oil smuggling operation?) that youre beyond caring. It doesnt help that the Big Action Sequence at the end with two planes winds up duller than a door knob. I think its best said during s sequence when one of the bad guys goes off, Molly asks Mickey, Wheres he going? Mickey says, I Dont Know. Exactly how I feel about this movie..

It is a bit chopped but not too bad. The sound quality is OK but has a few drop outs. The movie has some good moments. Some good action and a somewhat original story. In my opinion this movie was made when Hollywood was just starting to ramp up the pre-war military/propaganda movies, so it is not quite as "gung-ho" as later movies and, again, somewhat original. The characters could have been better developed and more story added to fill in the gaps. Then again, maybe there was more to this movie that was lost from this chopped up version. I found it entertaining overall.

Given that this film was listed in the IMDB as "lost" and that this may be the only print in existance, and most probably a 16mm TV print from the early days of TV, I can overlook the choppy quality of the print. What I can't overlook is the totally implausible, and sometimes incoherent plot. The professional actors (Jason Robards, Ed Cassidy) earned their money, while the leads and most of the rest of the cast are just terrible. Dick Cramer, in full wig, has to be seen to believed as Moran. Even the stunt flying is unexceptional. On the plus side, several young craftsmen behind the camera were learning their craft and they would be listed in movie credits at Monogram, PRC and others for some time to come.
