IN THE NAME OF 9/11: DESTROYING DEMOCRACY IN ORDER TO SAVE IT?
Newspaper headlines are chock full of reports about secret CIA prisons, deportation of terrorism suspects to countries that torture, millions of disappearing White House e-mails, warrantless searches of communications, and new, pseudo-forms of document classification by the government. Is all of this justified, even mandated, by the post-9/11 reality? Well, we do need to be vigilant about terrorism, says Patrice McDermott, director of openthegovernment.org, but not to the detriment of civil liberties. Once we give up rights, she observes, we never get them fully back. (Host: Mark Cohen)
THE LIVING WAGE AND STEPPED UP ENFORCEMENT OF LABOR LAWS
Now that Maryland has the nation's first statewide "living wage" law, it needs to be enforced. That job falls to Tom Perez, the state Secretary of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. A former federal prosecutor, Perez laments that enforcement of Maryland's labor laws on behalf of low-wage workers largely disappeared under the prior administration of Gov. Robert Ehrlich. So Perez's office is reaching out with the news that the state Department of Labor is again "open for business" and will vigorously enforce the laws on the book. (Host: Fred Feinstein)
ONE CLIMATE, ONE FUTURE, ONE CHANCE: A BOLD CHALLENGE TO GLOBAL WARMING
It's called the 1 Sky Initiative and it is a plan to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2020 and produce 5 million jobs in the process. Now that there is a broad consensus that climate change threatens life as we know it, Betsy Taylor argues it is time to pull together scientists and lay people to press for economic and political changes commensurate with what the science of global warming demands. And, she says, there's still time if we all begin pitching in right now. (Host: Mike Tidwell)
