Yen-Ming ChenThe Coffee House - December 2007 (2007)

This month in The Coffee House:

MARYLAND'S BIG STEPS ON DEFICIT, HEALTH CARE AND SLOTS
A look back on the Maryland General Assembly's recently completed Special Session and a look ahead to the 2008 Session with Senators Jamie Raskin (D-Dist. 20) and Ullyses Currie (D-Dist.25) in which it raised certain taxes in order to offset a structural deficit and expand health insurance coverage. The legislature also agreed to a statewide referendum on legalizing video gambling (slots). (Host: Jamie Raskin) THE SUPERBUG MRSA: NED'S STORY
Ned Seligman made his annual pilgrimage from Sao Tome to the US to raise money for his non-profit and see friends. Three days after seeing a dentist, he fell into a coma. When he awakened a month later, he found that his legs had been amputated and ends of his fingers surgically removed. His doctor believes he was infected by a superbug staph infection, MRSA, at the dentist that got into his blood system. We speak with Ned's doctors and an RSA specialist, and with Ned while in rehab and one year later. (Producer: Mark Cohen)

THE GROWING MENACE OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
Ned Seligman survived only because he was fortuitously treated with the last resort antibiotic for MRSA. But the more any antibiotic is used, observes Dr. John Powers, the more likely it is that bacteria will develop resistance to it. Powers is an infectious diseases specialist at the National Institutes of Health and an national authority on the efficacy and safety of antibiotics. (Host: Mark Cohen)

ALSO THIS MONTH... Reuben Jackson reviews a collection of poetry by Islamic detainees at Guantanamo… Visual artist Muriel Hasbun traces her family's emigration from Palestine to El Salvador to the US… Poet Kyle Dargan offers an “Autumal Divination”… and we have a Christmas carol by the Russian chorale group, Svetilan…
