RELUCTANTLY, THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION JOINS THE GLOBAL CONSENSUS ON CLIMATE SCIENCE
Having shuffled from promising to regulate carbon dioxide as a pollutant, to denying that human activity was causing global warming, to asserting that the science on climate change was uncertain, President Bush appears bent on completing two terms in office without taking significant action to address climate change. Whether due to the White Houseâs free market faith or its kinship with the oil industry, until a federal court ordered a critical climate study, the Bush administration continually censored, softened and stonewalled findings by government scientists, says Rick Piltz, director of Climate Science Watch at the Government Accountability Project. While the recently released reports add little to what is already known about climate change, it does fall squarely within the global scientific consensus that greenhouse gases are dramatically altering the Earthâs climate. Piltz notes that former White House press secretary Scott McClellanâs high profile âtell allâ book, What Happened, failed to acknowledge McClellanâs own attempt to tar Piltz. Piltz resigned from the government to protest the Bush administrationâs suppression of its scientistsâ prognosis for the planetâs climate.
