Subject: Astonishing!
Subject: Astonishing!
It takes a special kind of hubris to credit the "concessions" licensed by the government of Belgium for overcoming the difficulties of establishing "civilization" in the Congo without making the obvious connection to the concomitant deterioration of the quality of life of the people of the Congo. To call this report a whitewash of the facts is an insult to those people beaten, tortured, mutilated, raped, robbed and murdered with the complete acquiescence of the government of Belgium. It is a repugnant document.
I can't rate it because it's not appropriate in this case and could be misinterpreted. I highly recommend books written by ED Morel and reports published by Roger Casement about this horrific time in the history of the Congo. It's a new low in what purports to be civilization.
