Subject: TRULY WONDERFUL!
Back in early January, in commenting on his recording of Chuck Prophet’s 18th Dec gig at Armando’s, I expressed the hope that Marty Lefkowitz might weave his magic again on subsequent Sundays at that same venue.
Now that’s it’s all over, what can I say? Is there any way to award him more than 5 stars for this series of four superb recordings?
High quality live recordings such as these are all the more valuable when one considers that the last official Chuck Prophet live release was “Turn The Pigeons Loose”, recorded back in 2000 (I’m excluding the very good but not-very-live-sounding “As Seen On TV”, which surfaced a couple of years later).
There are very strong performances over the course of these four gigs, with Chuck and the Mission Express getting through around 50 songs in all, including quite a few covers. It’s particularly interesting to hear how the new songs from Temple Beautiful are shaping up “live”.
I rate the new album very highly indeed, and eight of it’s 12 songs are performed over the four nights. Among those not to make an appearance were “Play That Song Again”, “Museum Of Broken Hearts” and “He Came From So Far Away”, and I certainly won’t be complaining if these great songs make it onto the setlist by the time Chuck and the band make it to Europe in a few weeks time.
Now I really didn’t want to end on a sour note, but after a total of 1323 downloads of these four recordings, to date there has been a grand total of 6 offers of thanks to those responsible for all the hard work and dedication required to make them available to all of us. Unbelievable!
