Subject: Back in the Day
Wow- listening to this takes me back to my first exposure to CVB in late 1986. I had no idea who they were, they were spread out on the large stage in St. Louis' Kiel Opera House, looking haphazard and kinda hippie, Chris Molla was sitting down playing steel guitar. They were noisy, totally irreverant, doing long jams.

They were the opener at an REM show. REM fans were NOT into them; fans were yelling "REM!!! REM!!!" during CVB's set. David Lowery replied with "Yeah, REO!! REO will be out any minute"
I was blown away and continued to see them throughout the years up until the break-up. But that first show was trully the one that really stuck in my mind.

This archived San Francisco show has that same unhinged, in your face spirit. The sound quality is not great, the band sounds far away and I can't really hear much of the dialogue between the songs. And where is the audience? This is around the time of the II & III record (still my favorite!) where the songs are simple, short, stylistically-varied, with tons of instruments playing all over eachother. Before they tightened up and got heavier and more serious. In my opinion, Chris Molla added a lot to the band and once he left, things got a little too lean and hard-rock for my taste.
