missing critical part of the beggining
the version available here is missing the beginning, maybe 20 minutes? wikipedia says the plot is that Joe receives word in Honduras that he has inherited a fortune. His attorney begins to swindle him out of the money, Joe escapes.
This truncated version begins when Joe lifts himself over a seawall, desperate to escape un noticed and books passage on the ill fated ship. This info helps, but I am still unsure why Joe would need the actual paper contained in the letter he needs to get back to the United States.
The film is full of billowing fog and the cabaret performance is nice.

Phyllis Brooks/Robert Lowrey...
A very disjointed, confusing script. Choppy editing, could have been good if "all the dots were connected".
Phyliss Brooks, like Mary Beth Hughes, always fun to watch. Good actress, great voice. Should have had better roles during her career.
She & Lowrey were paired/starred in a number of films through the years. Some forget that Lowrey also was "Batman" in one of the Serials. He was always a solid performer.
Unfortunatly this film, despite the efforts of a few good cast members, is not really worth your time due to its shabby script/editing.

Not Bad
Robert Lowery and Charles Arnt give good performances in this flawed dark drama, evocative of Across the Pacific.
I downloaded the 512Kb MPEG4 file. Video quality was adequate; audio was fine.
