I was living in Banff at the time and we decided to take 3 days off work and see them on home soil for the first time as well as my first west coast Bisco shows...had to go. We then hit Portland and Seattle afterwards which are 2 complete universes in themselves :)
But this show, which was my lucky 12th is probably the best Bisco experience I ever had in terms of close proximity to partying with the band and crew as well as a dynamite show. There were around 50 people at the start and maybe 125 - 150 by night's end.
Yes the Linus n Lucy is great as is the monster Basis but full psychedelic marks to the madness of Pygmy !!, the jam into Memphis as well as the Spectacle. I get goosebumps thinking about it, 'nestled in the corner of southwestern B.C.'
After a halftime of endless BC skunk with the band minus Mags and 4 from the crew everyone started the 2nd in full puff the magic dragon mode, fried to the marrow, but in beautiful control. Only Brad(?) accepted our handful of boomers...what a trooper. But it was a border night.
Of course SOTW sounded like God's band playing for us and yes it is a superb version, especially the bootsy jam into Spy.
After the show, cheap sushi and another skunkfest. And to know they were hitting the border in about an hour or two was weighing on them a little lol.
I can't believe it will be 20 years in a few months...crazy.
ps - the soundcheck for these 3 shows are available.
peace & nugs

I had to double check to see if this wasn't a soundboard show as at the proper volume it certainly has a nice full band sound. The band start the show off oddly with the "Linus and Lucy (Great Pumpkin Jam)" which had me laughing out loud at the ten minute mark when I realized they were still playing it. Also some nice versions of "Barfly", "Spectacle" and Frank Zappa's "Pygmy Twylyte". The 40 minute "Basis for a Day" didn't do much for me, but other then that this was still an enjoyable listen.

I recently went back and listened to this 4-show run. This show is all over the map, with the opening Linus and Lucy being amazing. The rest of the set has some high points (I dig the Pygmy>Memphis) but nothing outrageous.
Set 2 is really hit and miss. I personally find the 40-minute basis very boring an uninspired. BUT...the svenghali!!! I have NEVER heard this song unfold the way it did this night.
This was one of my favorite "mini tours" the band ever put on. It was too bad the DVD choked on 10/31 for their Alice score, but the next 3 nights all opened with amazing jams.

I've heard other bands do Linus and Lucy jams (ie moe. and Umphrey's) but never have I heard the theme taken to the realms of trancefusion-psychedelia that this jam reaches. When it comes back down to earth, it settles into a Barfly. Wow. What a unique way to open a show. Barfly's are pretty rare, and segued into from the opening jam? This show is worth the download just for this segment. Throw in a 40 minute Basis that contains some out-of-this-world jamming and you've got a killer show, not to be missed.
The sound quality is pretty good, the bass is a tad heavy but all in all it's a very fine job. It's funny too because it sounds as if there's about 15 people there to see the show. At least they got one hell of one. This show, along with 11/2 and 11/3, each contain an extended improvised 'score' to open the show that are really great. Fall 01 rules!
