Subject: Average 2003 summer Biscuits.
Subject: Average 2003 summer Biscuits.
Sound isn't bad. Not great, not bad.
Hope - Standard
Home Again - Decent jam, nothing really noteworthy.
Confrontation > Buddha > Poob > Buddha > Confrontation - Confrontation jam begins with a light guitar riff from Barber, and some interesting keyboard work from Magner. I actually really like this jam a lot, especially the happenings around the 5 minute mark. Brownstein gives away the segue into Buddha about 5 minutes before the actual switch. He drops the Buddha progression for a little bit and they have a neat psycho-build right before the drop into Buddha. The Buddha jam is pretty boring, as is the first Boop jam. Neither really go anywhere. The 2nd Boop jam is also pretty boring. Magner does his best to save this one, but even panflutepatch can't save it. The jam does get very interesting at 19:44, especially the line that Magner comes up with. Really pretty minor key jamming here, but they lose it rather quickly. The jam out of the Buddha ending has a point where it's very different than usual, though not necessarily good. Sammy drops a beat that's almost a Latin-style swing, but the melody makers don't really do anything interesting with it. Missed opportunity. Near the end, before it turns to Confrontation, there's a very dark jam going on that's excellent, but it too doesn't really last.
Story > House Dog > Don > Rock Candy > I-Man > Story - The "jam" out of Story is basically them vamping the SOTW riff before Magner begins playing HDPF. Cool premise but I'd prefer a jam. House Dog 1st jam winds up in a house jam but maintains the feel of a House Dog 1st jam. Really cool and well-played. I'm actually most impressed by Brownstein here. Normally when they play outside of 4/4 time signatures (especially in this era) he plays rather monotonous, boring riffs. Here he's actually got some catchy, creative stuff going. This jam makes the 2nd set already better than the 1st. House Dog peak is very well done. Rather than the second vocal section, they again vamp the composition into the Don beginning. Cool segue, but no jam. The "jam" out of Don is essentially the same thing, with the opening riff to Rock Candy being played over the vamping of the Don outro. The Rock Candy has some cool tempo changing. They go from trance to dub back and forth in an awesome way. The I-Man 1st "jam" is really just one long Rock Candy tease. The 2nd jam starts out very light and airy, with some great interplay between Magner, Barber, and Brownstein. Great improvised peak back into the song. 3rd jam is all about Magner. He plays some great lines on the piano. Very dark and melodic, moving lines. Almost sounds like he wishes they could go into the end of House Dog or something. They eventually get away from that and wind up in a straight up trance jam, again featuring Magner. Once they start getting near Story, Barber is just playing some GORGEOUS riffs that work perfectly.

The first set is pretty much a throwaway, other than the first Buddha jam. Second set is a little better, but cool segue premises aren't really enough for me to give this better than 3 stars. Buddha (1st), House Dog, Rock Candy > I-Man > Story are the jams to listen for here.

Subject: Hidden Gem - Great Second Set!!!
love this second set. first set is ok, but nothing really stands out too much.
Story opens it up and segues right into House Dog. perfect. the jam in House Dog is amazing!! just building it up for the countdown with great interplay from Magner and Barber throughout. also, love the beat Sammy has going. House Dog should be noted as unfinished as they do not go into the second lyric section. instead, they drop a little transition jam after the peak into Don.
Don is short but sweet, the little jam and drop into Rock Candy is sooo nice. Rock Candy is fire from the start! love the tempo changes in the jam, a really good version.
perfect segue into I-man. love this I-man, first jam is fantastic, Barber just wailing away and Brownie has a great bassline going, both just owning this one. not a long jam, but very good. second jam is also fantastic. builds up nice and smooth. love the different piano and synth lines Magner has going. the segue back into Story is beautiful and flawless. Barber just nails it!!
sound quality on this recording is top notch. if anything just download the second set. definitely worth it.
