Taper's comments - 8/27/2009:
OK I FINALLY got to the next Dan Bern show of my BARN archive restoration series -- BARN8. Summer 2009 was busy for me, having attended 2 big music festivals so far (with one more to go!) filling my plate of music to process and distribute online. Also, this particular project I picked up and put down over many weeks, as it did require a lot of tedious work leveling out the volume between the crowd, the music, and Dan's speaking parts for each song, as well as removing (sometimes when possible) really annoying loud claps during songs. So I hope you enjoy the fruits of my labor, and this should be a VAST improvement if somehow you had gotten this show from me in the past.
BARN4 was a recording of the first time I ever saw Dan perform a full set on his own, while BARN7 was the first time I ever saw Dan, as an opener for Ani DiFranco. Well, on the night of the BARN4 recording (7/31/98), I attended the late show only, but was so impressed that I immediately decided that I had to come back to see BOTH shows the next night (the same thing happened when I went to see Medeski Martin & Wood for the first time in 1995!). So this represents both the early and late sets from the second night at the legendary/infamous Bottom Line on August 1, 1998. Lots of reasons to enjoy this show -- a very very focused and tight early show, a mini set of strange (one time only, I believe) performances of (admittedly not very good) songs he'd just written in Italy, some rarities, requests, and finally a bunch of crowd pleasers at the end.
