I'm giving this four stars, not because of Suraci's recording, which is great, by the way. No, I'm giving this four stars because the playing here is just fantastic. There was a serious Nor'easter blowing this night. We were wearing foul weather gear, watching the Southerners and Californians shiver, turn blue and leave the venue. By mid-second set, the lawn was sparsely populated. I walked down to the concourse separating the lawn from the pavilion and danced on the pavement unmolested by security.
Those are all good reasons to booster this show. However, the playing stands the test of time. Low Spark with Steve Winwood is fantastic. It has an element of spaceyness like PLQ brought to it, but it has Winwood's vocals and the burbling, modulated sax. Dang, this is very Traffic-like.
The second set string of songs before drums is lucid, slinky and smooth. Herring is all over the Stranger like it's a Shakedown, Scarlet grooves and Hard to Handle shifts between rock and space jazz. Who can argue with a late-set Playin-> Midnight Hour-? Playin''? I'll take it over Throwing Stones any day.
If you want the experience, play this in headphones on muddy turf while it's raining sideways at 48 degrees. It'll warm you up for sure.
