Subject: My First Show
Subject: My First Show
This was my first Dead show ( hard to believe it's been 15 years!) I was 18 years old- Prior to the show I had only heard the band's studio music ( American Beauty and Workingman's Dead)
I had the great fortune of seeing Robert Hunter open for the Dead, the unfortunate part is I didn't know enough to appreciate it! I sat next to an English teacher who taught in China, and had the best conversations about the songwriting of Hunter- 15 years later, I myself am an English teacher.
I had a curfew and had to be back home in Cape May ( 1.5 hours) by midnight- so I ended up leaving the show as Samson and Delilah had ended- In the true adventurous spirit of the Dead my car broke down in the lot- and I had to wait several hours for Triple-A to come. It was during that time that I fully got on the bus- I could hear the rest of the 2nd set from the parking lot, and ended up staying far later than most of the concert goers- I laid down on the hood of my 95 Pontiac Grand Prix and took it all in- i specifically remember a car in the lot playing " Dead Reckoning" long after most people had gone home, and that particular listening session of that record is something I think of every time I hear it now.
As far as the music, It's correctly been stated that this tour wasn't the finest- especially for the improv- the band just didn't really seem to like one another, but i will always remember this version of " You Remind Me" sang by Warren- and the beautiful melody of the Brokedown Palace encore, as I listened, high on it all, from the hood of my car, looking up into the hazy Camden sky.
