Subject: Diaries of REV. Ebenezer Muir Rice, a Tribute to his life.
Thank you for this amazing research of the Rice Family. I found 3 diaries that belonged to Reverend Ebenezer Muir RICE, dating 1861 to 1870. I spent years rewriting them in longhand and put them into binders, they were then typed, and donated to McMaster Baptist History Dept. I have retained one last book with a collection Eben entitled Lectures, Essays and Orations. This book contains all the students essays and several faculty member of he Woodstock Literary Institute, in Woodstock, On, Canada where Eben attended from 1861 till 1865. He had first been engaged to Mary Ann Bailey, a young woman who worked at the Wanzer Sewing Machine Factory in 1861. However Eben married Mary Keys BLAND, they had three children. Her parents were Emma and Luc Bland from Embro on. Eben became a minister in Bothwell in 1867, first living with Elder Pratt's and his wife. Due to poor health Eben and Mary with Eliza, name after Mary's sister and his son, Leonard Eton Rice who became an MD in Toronto, On., They returned to Martinsburg, New York where Eben ministered till his death. They had another son Henry. When Eben died Mary returned to her parents home. Eliza Rice, died age 4 and was buried in Beachville Cemetery. The three journals can be found on Rural Roots, Guelph University, and Oxford County Gen Soc. entitled, The Writings of Ebenezer Muir Rice (c) Several books, and a made for tv screen play have been written from this great body of work so carefully maintained by Eben Muir Rice who died at age 31 of an enlarged heart. He was a devoted Christian man who served the Lord till his dying day and brought many souls to Christ. There is also an online article in Hamilton Arts and Letters, 2020, Spring Ed 13-1. THE BOY WHO RAN AWAY TO HAMILTON, by Bev Campbell. Other works I have done using this body of work are entitled, The Longwoods Saga,(c) Eben of Manor Mills, a novel, and sequel,'Return to Martinsburg. Thank you. author and illustrator Beverly Campbell, Durham On. beverlycampbell@rogers.com
