Subject: Fun set; I was the taper
Sound Quality: Pretty good. 4 of 5 stars. It improves after the soundcheck ... the levels are good, just turn it up a little. The crowd is a talkative energetic bar, but they don't show up on the recording at all. the bass, drums, and vocals all show up really strong. the only thing is that donavon's guitar isn't really turned up as the other instruments at times ...
Show quality: 3.5 of 5 stars. really great sound for a tiny beach bar in san diego, ca before the band hit it 'big'. I just listened to this today, and I haden't listened to this recording of mine in a long time, probably the two and half years since the show happened. The sound is great, and the band sounds really 'tight' and 'on' ... it is just dean butterworth on drums and vocals, matt on bass, and donavon on guitar and vocals. I remember showing up to this show being amazed that former Ben Harper Innocent Criminal band-member Dean Butterworth was there doing some drums for donavon! ... Dean is an amazing energetic drummer and be brought it for this tiny show.. The only thing negative, and I sensed this back then and even more so on the recording, was that Dean really was trying to be more 'lead' of the band then he probably should have been. He would introduce the songs before donavon could even open his mouth, and seemed to really hurry the band up, in some cases for good and others for bad .. It seemed to me that Dean was trying to be the center of attention, forgetting that the band name was "Donavon Frankenreiter Band" ... I wasn't suprised when later in that year (2003) dean magically wasn't around the band anymore and Donavon had assembled a new group of people to play in his band. But to his credit, they had a fun run in the first half of 2003, even opening for Dave Matthews Band a few shows, and did a cool show ending trick where donavon fingered chords while dean hit the guitar with his drum sticks. some of those recordings are up here on the archive, check them out! .. but as for this old bar recording, it's a great fun one of early donavon songs ... dig it!

Excellent gig, a must for any Donavon Frankenreiter/Jack Johnson/Ben Harper fan.
Clearly his best gig quality to date.
It really shows true feeling and is a guarented smile. Tunes for the car in that summer sun.

Subject: Great Show
Great show - great quality. Thanks Tyler. Glad to see the ICs branching out. Clear tune, nice harmonies from a melodic Jack Johnson type singer/songwriter. I highly recommend it and look forward to more shows. By the way, the soundcheck contains a nice overheard comment from a girl about hooking up.
Playing at the martini ranch in Encinitas, Donavon played with recent band additions Dean Butterworth (drums) and a bass player. the sound is much faster now, more energetic. The three of them are recording a full length album of Donavon's music. It is to be released summer 2003.
Dean Butterworth is a former innocent criminal in Ben Harper's band. Another former IC, David Leach, is also in the band now and plays on the new record.
